What Are We Sacrificing for Good Grades? | Nancy Kalish

Thursday, September 17, 2026
In this thought provoking episode of Timeless Wisdom, Dennis Prager sits down with Nancy Kalish, co author of The Case Against Homework, to challenge one of the most accepted assumptions in modern education: that more homework means more learning. Kalish explains how excessive homework can leave children overwhelmed, burned out, and even cause them to lose their love of learning.
Dennis and Kalish discuss what children are giving up when homework takes over their evenings, including family dinners, physical activity, hobbies, reading for pleasure, and time simply being kids. Dennis also shares his own experience of doing very little homework in high school and argues that there is far more to a child's education than what happens in a classroom.
But what if the homework meant to help your child succeed is actually doing the opposite? Dennis and Kalish debate parents, teachers, and callers who disagree, explore whether homework really improves academic performance, and ask a bigger question: Are we sacrificing our children's childhoods in the pursuit of better grades?
